Founded in 1946 by international travel pioneer Juan Trippe, InterContinental Hotels emerged during a time when air travel dramatically shortened global journeys. Inspired by the success of the Pan American Clipper “flying boat,” which revolutionized elegant, efficient travel, Trippe responded to the post–World War II boom in trade and tourism promoted by President Roosevelt. Seeing a lack of luxury accommodation for the new wave of travelers, he envisioned hotels that combined modern comfort with authentic local culture — and thus InterContinental Hotels was born.
